This is an “interesting” thread. Regular/IRA/Roth IRA is just an account designation. It’s unrelated to API.
Anyhow, I don’t trade with Alpaca because they don’t offer IRA or Roth IRA accounts. In a taxable account, doing tax accounting, worrying about wash sales, etc. is too much of a headache.
So, +1 for “please offer IRA and Roth IRA accounts.”
+1 Agreed- Please support IRA accounts (traditional and ROTH). I imagine these would also require the support of cash accounts as opposed to margin only.
IRAs are on the list and will be coming. The details, and which plans will be supported, haven’t been finalized but we realize this is important.
One issue that will arise is most of these plans cannot be in a margin account. Therefore, one will need to handle the settle time for trades. This means waiting 2 days before using funds from a sale. In the current margin accounts those funds are available immediately.
Are there any updates on IRAs being offered by Alpaca? Algorithm trading without doing it in a retirement account is making us all have serious issues with tax compliance and reporting.
I signed up just to add my voice requesting IRA accounts. Didn’t realize margin was an issue, but that makes sense, hopefully you can figure out a solution to it.
I saw that IRAs are now supported through the brokerage API. Does this mean IRA accounts can be created for usage with the trading API as well, or is this still on the roadmap for future updates?
Also, the beginning of this thread was some of the silliest pointless “debate” I’ve ever seen. The tax benefits of trading in an IRA account are obvious.
Dan, would “limited margin” be applicable here? My understanding is that some brokerages allow limited margin accounts in order to circumvent the settlement delay issue. This would not allow short selling or adding leverage, but it does sound extremely useful for the trading I would like to do in an IRA.
