Hi,
I’m aware Canadians are unable to open a trading or broker account but wondering if there’s a way we can subscribe just for market data? There shouldn’t be any regulatory issues with that AFAIK.
Thank you,
Babak B.

@babakb Not a problem at all subscribing to market data for Canadians. One can simply open a paper trading account (only need an email address for that and it’s not a ‘real’ live broker account). Then 1) open the account portal in a browser 2) click on the ‘account’ avatar in the upper right corner. This brings up a menu. 3) Click on “Market Data Subscription” which will then step you through the signup process.
I went over a list of countries that alpaca.markets support and there are many. Sadly, Canada is not one of them. There are US brokers that operate in Canada, e.g. IBKR is one of them and offers trading APIs - it is, however, not as appealing as yours.
I am trying to get a grasp of whether Canada will soon be supported. Could you please elaborate on why Canada is not supported? Are you working on getting support for Canadians? If so do you have any timeline for that?
@manfredf The Canadian Securities Administrators requires any brokerage firm doing business in Canada to be registered in Canada and Alpaca doesn’t currently have that registration. No timeline when that will happen. Sorry.
In Canada, anyone in the business of trading securities or advising clients on securities must be registered with the securities regulator in each province or territory where they do business, unless an exemption applies.
